Today, I want to share with you a comprehensive guide called Websites The Simple Way, which will show you how to register and activate a domain name, how to setup an email account associated with your domain name using BlueHost, and how to quickly install WordPress so you can begin customizing your websites layout and publishing your website content.
Enough Is Enough.
Whether you know it or not, I began my entrepreneurial journey as a freelance, self-taught web developer. During my last year of college I began teaching myself how to build websites because at the time, my fraternity was in need of one and I was the only person willing to take on the task. Luckily for me, it was a task I can look back on with a smile.
Since people know me as the “web guy”, I always have people asking me how to build a website. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve answered that question. But what I can say is that I am tired of repeating myself.
Building Websites Is Simple.
I don’t know what it about websites and people, but for some reason, most of the people I talk to about building websites believe you have to be a tech savvy rocket scientist to set one up.
Well the cats out the bag, and I’m here to let you know that you don’t have to be tech savvy to build a website. All you need is to know how to read my eBook Websites The Simple Way, how to follow instructions, and how to click a mouse.
That’s really it. Websites The Simple Way will walk you step by step throughout the website building process.
What Is A Domain Name?
I know that for some of you, this is the first time you’re hearing about all this website lingo, so I’ll give you a brief overview of some of the terms you need to get use to hearing. The first being, domain name.
Google defines domain name as:
A series of alphanumeric strings separated by periods, such as www.oup-usa.org, serving as an address for a computer network connection and identifying the owner of the address. The last three letters in a domain name indicate what type of organization owns the address: for instance, .com stands for commercial, .edu for educational, and .org for nonprofit
Simply put, a domain name is a web address people type into their web browsers to bring up your website.
If you want a professional looking domain name, it’s best that you self-host your website. But if professionalism isn’t your top priority, there are tons of free hosting services – Blogger, WordPress.com, Tumblr, etc. – that will allow to build a website quickly.
What Is Web Hosting?
Google defines web hosting as:
The activity or business of providing storage space and access for websites
Web hosting is server space that you can use for free or rent depending on which type of hosting service you choose – free or self-hosted.
Web hosting allows your website pages to be stored on a server so that when people type in your domain name, they get access to your pages. Without web hosting, people wouldn’t be able to access your website, which is why it’s so important.
Other names for web hosting include website host, web hosting plan, and many others.
What Is WordPress?
Google defines WordPress as:
An open source CMS, often used as a blog publishing application powered by PHP and MySQL. It has many features including a plugin architecture and a templating system. Used by over 12% of the 1,000,000 biggest websites, WordPress is the most popular CMS in use today.
WordPress is a content management system (CMS) that is used most often as a blog publishing platform. But it can also be used to build websites as well.
Before WordPress came out, web developers had to type our XHTML and CSS code line by line to develop a website. However, now all you have to do is install WordPress once. After that you can load up a theme and customize it to your liking.
The best part of it all is that your content is unaffected. Regardless of which theme you decide to use, your content will never be lost are affected by the change.
Pretty brilliant stuff. Kudos to all the developers around the world who make it the best publishing platform on the planet.
That does it for the basics. Now, it’s time for you to get to work!
